Up A Ladder With A Camera

If you have ever heard the expression out on a limb you know how I felt a few weeks ago when I was out on a ladder, a tall ladder too.  I was asked to photograph the students at Holsenbeck Elementary from above them as they gathered in the shape of a “G” for an event they had coming up.  After hearing about how large the “G” would be, right at 1000 students and faculty, I knew right away that standing on top of the building wasn’t going to be high enough and suggested a bucket truck to get me higher.  When I arrived the morning of the shoot I saw this!

I knew right away that if this wasn’t high enough then nothing would be, except maybe a plane.  After going over how I would get to the top, which was climbing all the way, and a safety briefing I was ready.  At ten o’clock the fire drill alarm sounded and the staff and students were on their way out to form the “G”, which was marked off on the field with a rope.

That was also my signal to start climbing.  Looking ahead one rung at a time I started climbing and as I climbed the ladder started getting narrower and narrower.  After reaching the top and locking myself in it was time to watch the “G” form under me.  On the ground many things went through my head, one big one was to at some point turn my back to the crowd and pull out my cell phone and take a selfie with the students in the background.  Another one was to just turn and look around to see just what all  you could see from that high up.

And as quick as it began it was all over.  The fire drill lasted only 10 minutes from start to finish, not even long enough for me to get my selfie or even look around!  And when will I ever be on top of a fire truck ladder again?

After all was said and done I think they did an amazing job!  The Pre-K and Kindergarten were at the top of the “G” and as it came around the children got older, and bigger.  Now it was time for me to climb back down the ladder and get back to the studio and get ready for the big visit that afternoon.  Be sure and check back for another post telling more about this special day.
